TV and internet equipment continues to deliver more while using less energy. Independent reports from Evergreen Economics show that industry-led voluntary agreements are driving continued efficiency improvements in set-top boxes, modems, routers, and other home internet equipment, even as broadband speeds and device capabilities have increased. In 2025, participating companies once again met their commitments, extending more than a decade of progress that has reduced energy consumption, lowered emissions, and saved consumers billions of dollars.

Saved on consumer electricity bills
Over the set-top box energy efficiency program’s 13-year history, improvements have saved consumers an estimated $26.5 billion in electricity of costs. In 2025 alone, those savings totaled $4.36 billion, showing the continued impact of making devices more energy efficient.

Metric tons of CO2 emissions avoided
Reduced set-top box energy use has helped avoid 126 million metric tons of CO2 emissions from power plants over the program’s 13-year history. That includes 16.9 million metric tons avoided in 2025 alone, demonstrating the cumulative environmental impact of continued efficiency improvements.

Improvement in home internet equipment energy efficiency
The average power use of new home internet equipment relative to the broadband speeds it delivers has improved 91% since 2015. Modems, routers, and other devices are delivering faster speeds and improved Wi-Fi performance while using significantly less energy for the connectivity they provide.
